Mike has over 18 years experience as a commercial helicopter pilot. This includes areas of operation in the Arctic, BC, Alberta, Ontario, Australia, and French Polynesia.
Mike still maintains a current Commercial Helicopter Pilots License and has extensive experience / endorsements on: Bell (Twin Engine) Medium BH412 & BH212, Intermediate BH407, BH06, as well as Airbus EC120, EC145 & AS350 series helicopters.
Mike’s previous aviation management has also extended into Safety and Logistics. This includes Level 2 – BSI ISO-9001:2008 Internal Systems Auditor. He has held Transport Canada regulated positions within Commercial Flight Operations, that have included, Training Pilot, Chief Pilot, Safety Officer and Assistant Throughout his 18 year career, Mike has maintained an incident and accident free, flight operations record.
Mike draws on his experience from ship operations, hoisting and rappelling personnel, precision long lining, firefighting, heliskiing, arctic operations, and extensive mountain flying environments, to translate into “real life rational”, for our clients and their projects.
Mike’s team leadership skills have been realised, as he has been extensively involved with Wildland firefighting for over 15 years. This includes the Rapp Attack program in British Columbia and Australia. In addition to BC and Ontario contract machines, Mike has operated in all of the Alberta districts over a number of years, from HAC deployment to Tanker Operations.

Michael Kenney is the President of Matrix Aviation Management. Mike’s expertise spans over 17 years, with a focus on exploration, mining, and remote project aviation support. With a background in Accounting and Finance, Mike specializes in project management, budget and variance management, HSE Compliance, and risk management assessments.
Mike’s aviation experience is based on a “boots on the ground” approach to the projects he is involved with. This comes with a focused perspective on aviation safety and logistical efficiency. Aviation projects Mike has managed include the engineering, construction, and operation of several remote airstrips, ice strips (oceans and lakes), helicopter landing zones/landing pads, and nautical vessel support. In addition to the infrastructure development for fixed wing and rotary wing programs, Mike has managed significant airlift operations that include fuel re-supply, heavy equipment mobilization, camp deployments, personnel movement, medivac, and project resupply.
Many of the projects Mike has been involved with operate in the most hostile aviation environments on Earth. Mike’s approach has never wavered. His focus is on creating a safe and efficient environment for all stakeholders during each operation. His effective approach to executing operational efficiencies has saved clients considerable amounts of money and time on their programs by creating realistic deliverables from the planning and budgeting phase through to full project completion.

Janelle has over 14 years’ experience in the aviation industry. Her diverse experiences range from airport, fixed wing and commercial operations, the defense sector, maintenance and overhaul, and helicopter operations.
Janelle’s passion for the aviation industry led her to study the field, graduating with an Advanced Diploma of Aviation Management with Honours. Her formal education coupled with her real-world experience has allowed her to integrate extremely well into this fast-paced sector.
Janelle’s previous aviation management roles have focused on flight ops, logistics, crewing, scheduling and project management. Drawing from these diverse roles allows her to see the “bigger picture”, mitigating potential project oversights. She focuses on fostering strong working relationships with clients. She not only understands the importance of being in the field, she enjoys being hands-on with the work she’s involved in. Her strengths include being an effective communicator, extremely detail-oriented, the ability to think outside the box, and shift priorities effectively.
Janelle puts an emphasis on always learning. She dives in to learn company history and project scopes, to better understand the needs of the client. Throughout her career she has taken several additional management courses and aviation training sessions to stay on top of the ever-changing industry. Most recently she has completed her Basic Aviation Risk Standards – Managing Contracted Aviation Risk (BARS MCAR- Onshore) Training.
Ted has had a varied career in aviation which has centered around instruction and aviation process, since his time in the Canadian Armed Forces. He was Deputy Flight Commander of the Operational Training Unit for Chinook helicopters at 447 Squadron plus held the position of Unit Instrument Check Pilot and was the Unit Standards Officer. He also instructed on the simulator for 447 SQN at Fort Campbell Kentucky as required during the years he held those positions at 447 SQN.
Upon release from the CAF, Ted went into the civil world at Helijet Airways then Canadian Helicopters International where he was utilized as a TRI and simulator instructor at various times as required by those employers. Ted then carried onto new challenges with Gulf Helicopters, CHC, Hevilift Malaysia as line pilot and Base Flight Safety Officer. Most recently Ted engaged Wildcat Helicopters as IFR Subject Matter Expert and line pilot.
Ted was involved with the management of the fixed and rotary wing aviation resources for BG Tanzania’s offshore drilling campaign, and I was the aviation consultant in a Logistics and Infrastructure Resource Assessment for an LNG development project in Mozambique for JAS Projects, an international freight forwarding specialist. It is here where Ted honed his skills as an aviation Auditor and Safety specialist.
In addition to over 15,000 hours of Flight time, Ted’s accreditations also include – BSI ISO-9001: QM-Quality Management Systems, AU-Management Systems Auditing.
Cory Leahy began his flying career 13 years ago in the Rocky Mountains between Lake Louise and Jasper. Flying sightseeing tours over the glaciers and Icefields from bases along the Icefields Parkway and Canmore Alberta in a Bell 206. From there he moved on to general charter and Wildfire operations work throughout Alberta. Initially based in the Fort McMurray region, his first exposure to Wildfire ops, was flying fire boss and admin on a medium-sized campaign fire in a light helicopter just South of Fort McMurray. Over the next 7 years, he gained experience in all facets of Wildfire fighting and prevention, including flying Initial Attack, Helco, Bucketing, Heavy equipment groups, Aerial ignition, and IR scanning/mapping. Gaining exposure to everything from small IA fires, all the way up to large 20+ machine complex fires. His tenure in Alberta included tours from Fort Chip, down through the Grande Prairie, Ft Mac. and Lac Le Biche regions. He was a part of the large Cold Lake weapons range complex fire and has worked as far South as Rocky Mountain house and Lethbridge.
With experience on everything from light and intermediate helicopters, right up through medium and heavy lift sized machines, Cory brings a wealth of knowledge on varying types and capabilities. In 2016 Cory began flying 2 crew IFR, and in 2018 received his initial NVG certification. Since then, he’s flown extensively at night on both ANVIS-6 (green) and ANVIS-9 (white phosphorus) Night vision Imaging systems, progressing to Advanced NVG status. This recent 2 crew IFR and NVG experience have provided him with knowledge and insights critical for the safe implementation of Nighttime Firefighting operations that many provinces are considering. He’s currently trained on Pilot Decision Making, Crew Resource Management, Safety Management systems, TDG Air, and WHMIS with a Canadian ATPL and Current 2 crew IFR PPC and Class 1 Medical Certificate.
Mark has over 31 years as a commercial helicopter pilot with experience in, firefighting, heliskiing, arctic operations, and mountainous terrain. This includes areas of operation in the Arctic, British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Labrador/Newfoundland. His combined experience provides the rationale for our clients to select Matrix to meet specific helicopter management, safety, and operational requirements of their projects.
